VIA SPIRITUS DOJO

The Way of the Spirit

A nine-month practice cycle in surrender, discernment and conscious participation with life

18 January – 18 October 2027 · Mondays · Online

SURRENDER STUDIES

We have spent centuries developing the arts of control: how to plan, organise, predict, optimise and direct. These capacities matter. But there is another human capacity that modern life has cultivated far less carefully: the capacity to surrender.

Not surrender as resignation or passivity, but as the ability to loosen our grip on what we think should happen, become receptive to what is actually happening, and respond without pretending that we control the outcome.

Spiritus is Latin for spirit, breath, vitality and animating force. It points towards the felt movement of life through us, between us and beyond us — something that may be sensed directly even when it cannot be fully captured in language.

Via Spiritus is a nine-month dojo for this inquiry.

SOME THINGS CAN ONLY BE KNOWN THROUGH PARTICIPATION

Across contemplative and mystical traditions we find a recurring insight: some dimensions of reality cannot be understood from the outside. Love, silence, trust, beauty and surrender disclose themselves differently when we enter them.

These traditions therefore work not only with ideas, but with the transformation of the perceiver. Attention is trained, habitual patterns are loosened, the body is included and the capacity to remain present to not-knowing deepens.

The instrument of perception changes.

Via Spiritus does not ask participants to adopt a particular religion, cosmology or metaphysical belief. We practise, observe and investigate. What becomes perceptible when the noise quietens? What happens when we stop immediately imposing our interpretations upon experience? What can become visible between us — in relationship and in the intersubjective field — that may not be available to either person alone?

The practise takes these questions seriously while leaving their ultimate answers open.

FROM CONTROL TO PARTICIPATION

Much of modern culture teaches us to approach reality as something to understand, manage and transform according to our purposes. This has given humanity enormous power, but it can also become a form of blindness. We begin to mistake our maps for the territory, intention for attention, certainty for clarity and control for responsibility.

Via Spiritus asks whether another relationship is possible.

Can we move from power over reality towards participation with reality?

Can we act strongly without dominating? Can we hold intention while remaining available to surprise? Can we become receptive enough to sense what is emerging, discerning enough to recognise what deserves response, and courageous enough to participate without knowing where that participation will lead?

This is not an argument against agency. It is an inquiry into a more mature form of agency — one capable of both commitment and surrender.

EROS · SOURCE · GRACE

Throughout Via Spiritus we work with three ancient orientations: Eros, Source and Grace. We do not treat them as metaphysical entities that participants are asked to believe in. We use them as names for dimensions of experience that may become more perceptible through practice.

SOURCE names the depth we may encounter when our habitual grasping, projecting and controlling become quiet enough for reality to disclose itself differently. It is the practice of becoming available before we know what we are available to.

EROS names the felt lure towards aliveness, relationship, creation and form. It is more than desire. Desire can contract the world around the self; Eros can draw us beyond ourselves towards greater participation. Yet attraction alone proves nothing. Projection can feel like revelation and compulsion like calling. Contemplation purifies Eros; discernment tests Eros.

GRACE names what becomes visible when we recognise the limits of self-authorship. A conversation opens in a way nobody planned. A group discovers an intelligence no individual possessed. A possibility appears that could not have been manufactured. Grace is the experience of receiving more than individual effort could have produced alone. It need not imply supernatural intervention; it may arise through relationship, emergence, contingency, nature, history or dimensions of reality we do not yet know how to name.

These three orientations belong to a larger movement:

Source — becoming available.
Eros — sensing what draws us towards greater aliveness.
Discernment — testing what appears worthy of response.
Surrender — relinquishing the demand to control what follows.
Participation — acting wholeheartedly within a reality larger than ourselves.
Grace — recognising what becomes possible that was never ours to manufacture.

The deeper question is not whether these words describe metaphysical entities, but what they help us notice, discern and participate in more consciously.

THE PRACTICE OF DISCERNMENT

Surrender without discernment can easily become confusion. We can mistake projection for intuition, avoidance for acceptance, passivity for trust, or our own desire for the movement of life.

Discernment therefore sits at the heart of Via Spiritus. It asks not simply whether something feels meaningful or alive, but what kind of life it creates. Does following this movement make us more present, truthful, relational and responsible? Does it open the world or narrow it around ourselves?

We cultivate openness without naivety, surrender without abandoning responsibility, mystery without credulity, and commitment without the illusion of control.

Surrender begins where discernment reaches its limit. We may sense what appears worthy of response and choose to commit ourselves fully, but we cannot determine what reality will do with our participation.

I will give myself fully to what I judge worthy of response, while remaining aware that I am participating in a reality whose unfolding exceeds me.

This is not weaker agency. It is a different relationship to agency.

THE INTERSUBJECTIVE FIELD

Some of the most important practice in Via Spiritus happens between people. Human beings do not perceive or develop alone. Our attention, sense-making and identity are profoundly relational.

When people become deeply present together, something can sometimes emerge that cannot easily be reduced to what any individual brought into the encounter. A conversation develops its own direction. A group senses something together. An insight appears to belong to the relationship itself.

We use the term intersubjective field to investigate these experiences. We ask what conditions deepen collective perception, what distorts it, and how power, projection, conformity and belonging shape what groups imagine they are sensing.

LIFE BECOMES THE DOJO

For nine months we train five capacities:

Receptivity · Presence · Discernment · Surrender · Responsiveness

We practise through embodiment, contemplation, silence, relational inquiry and attention to the intersubjective field. But the aim is not to become skilled at contemplative practice. Practice is preparation for participation.

The real dojo is life: relationships, leadership, conflict, creativity, uncertainty, love, loss and moments when our plans fail.

Over time, the central question shifts from What do I want life to become? towards What is life asking of me here?and finally How can I participate well?

THE RHYTHM OF THE YEAR

The programme follows the rhythm of the living world.

WINTER · SOURCE
Stillness, not-knowing and becoming available. We practise interrupting the compulsion to act and explain, making space for something new to emerge.

SPRING · EROS
Emergence, longing and discernment. What draws us? What carries aliveness? What is merely excitement, and what appears worthy of response?

SUMMER · PARTICIPATION
Formal practice becomes lighter and life becomes the dojo. Relationships, work, creativity and the unexpected become the curriculum.

AUTUMN · GRACE
Returning, harvesting and integrating. What changed? What came through effort, and what arrived through relationship, circumstance or gift?

THE INVITATION

We live in a civilisation extraordinarily skilled at extending its power into the world. Our technological, organisational and cognitive capacities continue to grow. The question is whether our capacity for participation can mature with them.

If we want a different world to emerge, new ideas, technologies and institutions may not be enough. We may also need a different quality of relationship with reality itself: one in which we can listen before we act, remain present when we do not know, recognise what calls for response, and commit ourselves without pretending to control the unfolding.

Via Spiritus is for leaders, facilitators, practitioners and explorers who sense that the next edge may not be another method to master, but another relationship with life itself.
