Cryptography, or the art to exchange secret messages in the presence of third parties, can be both amazing and intimidating – on the one hand, it is omnipresent in the digital world and the cornerstone to many of our daily online activities. Without it, digital bank transfers, online privacy or e-commerce would be unthinkable. On the other hand, the mathematics involved and their implementation in software are challenging even for experts.
Understanding what cryptography means in practice, what it can do for you and how to use it, however, is surprisingly easy. In this workshop, we will walk through the basics of public-key cryptography and share encrypted messages with each other via OpenPGP, the free and open-source "Swiss Army knife of cryptography". Other tools for secure communication and general strategies for your digital security will be discussed as well.
